Flora Fountain, Bombay
The fast paced city of Bombay (Mumbai) is the country’s financial capital. It is believed to have been formed from a cluster of seven small islands the Portugese called Bom Bahia in the 16th century. It grew into a popular Portuguese trading port that was handed over as dowry to the English King, Charles II who in turn, rented it to the East India Company in the late 1600’s. A century later, it was the `Gateway to India’ with a distinctive city culture.
This stone fountain (1864) was built in what was once the Bombay fort area. It was named after Flora, the Greek Goddess of flowers.
