Gumbaz, Srirangapatna
Srirangapatna is an ancient island and pilgrimage centre on the river Kaveri near
Mysuru, It contains the Hoyasala period Ranganathaswamy Temple dedicated to Vishnu and other temples built by the local Wodeyar dynasty. It also has many structures of historical significance as it was once the seat of the 18th century Mysore Sultanate rulers Haider Ali and Tipu Sultan, the Tiger of Mysore.
The 18th century Gumbaz is the mausoleum of Tipu Sultan and his parents, Haider Ali and Fakhrunissa Begum. Its roof is covered with Tipu’s stylised tiger stripe motif, the `bubri’, meaning tiger in Persian.
