Mutthapan, Theyyam, Kannur
The Theyyam, a ritual performance from north Kerala (Malabar), is usually performed from October to March. It includes elements from theatre and movement as well as trance possession during which the male body is ‘inhabited’ by a deity during the period of performance. These performances often continue overnight or last for a few days at a stretch. They are usually commissioned by temples, shrines and private residences.
The dramatic costumes, masks and make up of theTheyyam deities are inspired by motifs and materials from nature. Mutthapan, a male martial deity is characterised by his thick black moustache, which is a symbol of masculinity.
