Long before the East
India Company arrived here in the 17th century and built Fort St.George, the Dutch and the Portuguese had already left a mark on the sea facing city of Chennai (Madras). The port-city then became the seat of the British administered Madras Presidency till India’s Independence in 1947. It continues to be a showcase for many beautiful colonial structures that were built in the Indo- Saracenic style popular at that time.
The red brick Victoria Public Hall (1890) was once the town hall for Madras city. It was built with donations by several city personalities and has played host to community gatherings and other public events over the decades.
